Creating and managing data requests
A data request is how you ask a company for the financial data you need — clearly, on a schedule, with status you can track. Instead of emailing and hoping, you make a structured ask and always know whether the data is current. This article covers creating, replacing, and closing requests.
What is a data request?
A data request is a standing ask to one company for one type of data on a regular cadence. Each request captures:
- Type — accounting or banking data
- Coverage — how far back to go (for example, the last 12 months)
- Cadence — how often you need it (monthly in V1)
- A note — optional context telling the company what you're looking for
The company fulfils the request by connecting a data source or uploading files. You can see what they've provided and whether each period is on track — all in one place.
Creating a data request
- Open the company from your portfolio and go to its Data Requests section.
- Click Create Request.
- In the Create Data Request dialog ("Request accounting or banking data from this company"):
- Choose the type — Accounting or Banking.
- Set the coverage — this defaults to Last 12 months. You can choose Last 24 or Last 36 months, or enter a custom timeframe.
- Cadence is set to Monthly (15th of month) as a default to give companies enough time to close out the previous month’s books
- Add a note (optional) to tell the company what you need.
- Click create. You'll see "Data request created successfully."

The company is notified and can begin fulfilling the request right away. The first period is due 10 days after you create the request, giving them time to get set up.
Tip: You can also create requests while inviting a company to Verified Metrics — it's an optional step in the invitation flow. And when a company joins through a general invitation link, accounting and banking requests are created automatically with the standard settings.
One active request per type
A company can have at most one active accounting request and one active banking request from you at a time. If you try to create a second of the same type, you'll see "An active accounting request already exists for this company." To change an existing request, replace it (see below) rather than creating a new one.
When the company's data becomes available to you
As soon as the company connects a data source or uploads a file, that data is visible to you — you don't have to wait for them to finish. When the company marks a period complete, that's their confirmation that the period is the full, final picture. You'll see each period's status update as they work.
Replacing a request
Use Replace when you need to change a request's type, coverage, or note. Replacing closes the current request and creates a new one in a single step.
- Open the request, open the Manage request dropdown menu and choose Replace.
- The dialog explains: "This action will close the current request for [company] and create a new one. Closed requests will still be viewable under the closed data requests tab."
- Adjust the details and confirm. You'll see "Data request replaced successfully."
Closing a request
When you no longer need the data, close the request.
- Open the request, open the Manage request dropdown menu and choose Close.
- The dialog confirms: "You can start a new request later, but a closed one can't be reopened." and "This action is permanent. Closed requests will still be viewable under the closed data requests tab."
- Confirm with Close Request. You'll see "Data request closed."
Closed requests move to the Closed tab. If you need that data again later, create a new request — there's a + Create a new Accounting request (or Banking) shortcut on a closed request's detail page.
Responding to a rejected request
If a company can't fulfil a request as specified, they can reject it with a note explaining why. The request is flagged as Rejected, and you'll see their reason. You have two options:
- Replace the request with adjusted details that the company can fulfil, or
- Close the request if it's no longer needed.
Reminders sent on your behalf
You don't have to chase companies. Verified Metrics emails the company reminders as each period's deadline approaches and shortly after if it's still incomplete. You're notified when a request needs attention or when a period is completed.
Common Questions
Can I request both accounting and banking from the same company? Yes. Create one request of each type. Each can have its own coverage and note.
Can I ask for a one-off snapshot, or change the schedule? In this version, requests run monthly. One-off and other cadences aren't available yet (coming soon).
How do I change a request after creating it? Use Replace — it closes the current request and creates an updated one in a single step. You can't edit a request in place.
The company rejected my request — what now? Read their note, then either Replace the request with details they can fulfil, or Close it if it's no longer needed.
Can I reopen a closed request? No. Create a new request instead. Closed requests stay visible under the Closed tab for your records.
Do I need to do anything each month? No. Once a request is set up, the company keeps it current — automatically if they've connected a data source. You'll only hear from us when something needs your attention, like if a source was disconnected or if a request deadline was not met. In both cases, users of the company will be reminded to provide the requested data
